Are You Highly Sensitive? Creating Your Own “Energy Filter” with Obsidian & Amethyst

Some people seem naturally more sensitive to everything around them.

They may feel drained soon after stepping into a crowded space. They notice subtle shifts in someone’s mood, even when nothing has been said. And after a lively social gathering, rather than continuing to socialize, they may find themselves craving somewhere quiet to be alone.

In popular culture and modern lifestyle conversations, people who feel especially sensitive to their surroundings and the emotions of others sometimes describe themselves as Empaths.

It isn’t a medical diagnosis. For us, it’s better understood as a form of self-observation: Which environments are taking up my attention? Which feelings are actually mine? And when do I need to reestablish my boundaries?

This is another way of thinking about Energy State Management.

3 Questions: Are You Easily Affected by Your Surroundings?

Take a moment to notice your own patterns:

01 | Do you quickly want to leave crowded or noisy places?
At a mall, party, airport, or large event, do the sounds, conversations, movement, and constant stream of information sometimes feel like “too much”?

02 | Do other people’s moods easily affect your own?
When someone around you feels tense, down, or irritated, do you sometimes find yourself getting pulled into the atmosphere—even when it has nothing to do with you?

03 | Do you need time alone after a lot of social interaction?
Even when you genuinely enjoyed the gathering, do you still need some quiet time afterward to return to your own rhythm?

If these experiences feel familiar, there’s no need to rush into labeling yourself an “Empath.”

What may matter more is recognizing that you might benefit from being more intentional about managing your attention and personal boundaries.

Obsidian & Amethyst: Creating a Symbolic “Energy Filter”

We like to think of an “energy filter” as a selective boundary.

It isn’t about shutting the world out. Instead, it’s a reminder you can carry into different environments:

I can notice what’s around me without having to take everything in.

With its deep, substantial presence, Obsidian has long been associated with protection and boundaries in crystal traditions. When worn as jewelry, it can serve as a reminder of Boundaries—to preserve a sense of personal space even in crowded or emotionally complex environments.

Amethyst, with its distinctive purple tones, has a quieter, more introspective presence. Across different cultural traditions and modern crystal culture, it has often been symbolically associated with clarity, calm, and inner awareness.

If Obsidian reminds us to create an outer boundary, Amethyst can remind us to bring our attention back inward.

This isn’t because natural stones can literally filter other people’s emotions. Rather, a piece of jewelry you wear every day—something tangible that you can touch and feel—can become a simple, meaningful reminder:

How am I feeling right now?

What deserves my attention today?

What feelings aren’t mine to carry with me?

Perhaps a true “energy filter” was never meant to be an invisible shield.

It’s about becoming clearer about your own boundaries—and knowing when to move closer to the world and when to return to yourself.

Feel the world without carrying all of it. Stay open, but keep your boundaries. Bring your energy back to yourself.
